Live. Learn. Belong. This Summer in Holland, Michigan

The Ready For Life Summer Live-In Program offers young adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to build real-world independence while enjoying everything that beautiful Holland, Michigan has to offer. Participants live in Ready For Life–supported independent living houses, where they experience the freedom and responsibility of adult life—while still having the support they need to succeed.

Throughout the summer, students practice everyday life skills such as meal planning, cooking, budgeting, laundry, transportation, and household management, all in their own shared home. Just as important, they learn how to navigate the community—accessing local shops, restaurants, parks, beaches, employers, and recreational activities that make Holland such a vibrant place to live.

With staff coaching and individualized supports, students build confidence as they:

  • Use public transportation and ride-share services
  • Shop for groceries and personal items
  • Visit libraries, fitness centers, and community events
  • Practice social skills in real-world settings
  • Explore volunteer and work experiences

This program is more than a place to stay—it is a launchpad for independence.

By living in Ready For Life homes and being fully immersed in the community, participants gain the skills, confidence, and connections they need to move toward a more independent and fulfilling future.

Whether relaxing by Lake Michigan, grabbing coffee downtown, or learning to run a household, students don’t just visit Holland—they become part of it.

mi LIFE! Summer Series

The mi LIFE! Summer Series coursework is built up of four core areas of focus. Over the span of the 10-week program, you will develop the knowledge and skills needed to excel in your future at Ready for Life Academy!

This program is designed to help students excel in their future at Ready for Life Academy, or similar Inclusive Post-Secondary Education programs. Not interested in RFL, but want to learn more about your rights and develop independence as an adult with a disability? This class is for you, too!

These four areas include:

  • Disability Rights: This section of the course covers Self-Advocacy, the models of disability, and discusses how past advocates fought for the rights of all adults with disabilities!
  • Legal Rights: Let’s chat about the Americans with Disabilities Act! What are the laws that protect me? As an adult with a disability, what do I have access to at work or at school? What about in the community?
  • Disability and College: Here we answer key questions such as, what is college like, and why do people go? How do I talk about my disability in college and get the accommodations I may need? How do I make friends?
  • Independent Living: In our last focus area, we dive into living independently! How do I take care of myself, my home, and my money?

Ready For Life’s comprehensive curriculum is designed to inspire independence and confidence for the school year ahead!
